Hold them in your heart...

While we all wish we could do more for the people of Ukraine, we can take time every day to hold them in our hearts. To stop and think of them and pray. These little glass hearts by artist Kit Paulson act as perfect talismans for that. Wether a worn or a necklace or nestled your pocket they are a tangible reminder that our hearts are all made of glass right now. Ready to shatter with every news story we hear.

As a maker of glass objects she has explored human anatomy and wearable objects. I’m pretty sure I‘ve featured her work before, showing her skull and bone pieces and her masks.

She works with borosilicate glass – the same type of glass used for kitchenware, namely Pyrex. The fact that it has a low coefficient of expansion means that, when heated and cooled, it does not expand and contract very much. The risk of cracking is therefore slight. This allows her to build large structures with confidence, like her striking wearable glass sculptures or detailed three-dimensional renderings of the human anatomy.

“I'm both repelled and fascinated by human anatomy and the way our very animal bodies and biological processes are in constant competition with what we like to believe are our independent minds.

All humans have a peculiar ability to have an inner life that is quite separate to outward appearances. The way that this inner life is mostly hidden but sometimes made visible is what’s interesting to me.”

Her smaller pieces in her Etsy shop are especially captivating and charming ( and occasionally creepy).

I’m a sucker for anything that features hands. Pendants, doorknockers. These are glorious and the little sculpture below featuring a blackbird perching on a little glass hand is beyond darling.
